AQUARIUM

Spring 2009 was much about the short-film "Aquarium". I was engaged as a scenographer for this film. But because the main character "Emma" is a paintress, I also produced a few paintings for the scenography. Two of these paintings are worked on by "Emma" in the film. So my engagement also involved showing the actress, Viktoria Winge, how to use the brushes, pallette, rags tools and materials. During the shooting I also did my best to keep track of the continuity of the props. With great help from my assistant Ida Lervåg.

"Emma" lives a life in solitude. She spends her working days painting using her self as a motif and subject. "Emma" is deaf, so I figured a painting with falling ears was in line. The falling ears of this painting became a my signature in the film.

In the film we see "Emma" struggle with the eyes in this painting. She gets frustrated and covers the eye-holes with wite paint. Because this painting is done in oil the acress, Viktoria, could overpaint the eyes repeatedly. I easily removed the paint between each shooting.

By removing a fake wall we were able to fit almost the whole apartment in one frame. The scenography is composed acording to the image on the monitor. Furniture and objects are moved around to create good compositions. Film is image.

My brother Bård Røssevold is both script-writer, director and much more. "Aquarium" is his film, but the two of us worked close together during the whole process. We both enjoy creating together.

THE FROST

The spring of 2008 i was consumed by the enormous work with the Spanish/Norwegian feature film "The Frost". I had already been engaged in the project for a couple of years, when we started shooting the film. The Frost had a little shooting in Spain, but the majority of the film was filmed in The Ålesund area, here in Norway. My part of the project spread into different part of the pre-production. But at some point during the production, I was given the title "Assistant artistic Director". For me this film was a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. From now on I will stick to painting.

The Widow Rat's farm was an fascinating spot. The location was already perfect as the home of this spooky woman and her, not-quite-with-it companion, Mopsemand. Our job was to mess up the place, plant some threes, and place old farm machinery aroud the buildings.

Dressing the Widow Rat's pick-up was a blast. In this early early morning picture one can see Karin Nogva and Rimor Hanken Giske, my right and left arm during this project.

The Widow Rat's pick-up truck was a mad vission. Bibi Anderson played the role of the Widow Rat, and this colourful and loony car became her token in the film. When Little Eyolf drowned he fell off the back of this truck.
In this picture one can see the Director in the driver seat, and next to him the Artistic Director. On the back our fantastic Director of Photography, David Omedes.

The Ocean-people of Ålvundfjord school

In 2002 I did a commissioned series of paintings for the school and pre-school of Ålvundfjord. I wanted to create a "world" where the children of the school could drift off to. This resulted in the 16 painting series of the Ocean-people. The idea is that inside the internal walls of the school, there is an under-water world. So you can move from one room to the next and look in through the picture frames, and you will see all sorts of Ocean-people getting on with their lives. The Ocean-world is like an aquarium. Where you move from one glass wall to the next, looking into the same fishtank.

This painting is hanging in the basement of the school. At the bottom of the sea. This was the last painting I executed in this large and extensive series. The painting is my signature. This time around the children are painting the Paintress. She is painted from nothing, just like I create my paintings... Or perhaps the Paintress has fallen asleep content and exhausted. And so the children can have their revenge. After all, nobody asked them if they wanted these paintings in their school.
